How to Photograph a Tick for Identification

A clear photo is the biggest factor in whether an identification can narrow the specimen to a likely species.

Set up the photo

  • Place the tick in a clear sealed container or on a light, plain background
  • Use bright indirect light and turn off filters
  • Rest the phone on a stable object instead of holding it in the air
  • Tap the tick on screen to lock focus

Capture the useful views

  • Photograph the back from directly above
  • Take a second close side or underside view if it can be done safely
  • Include a ruler or coin nearby for scale without covering the tick
  • Review the image at full size before uploading
