Tick identification guide
How to Photograph a Tick for Identification
A clear photo is the biggest factor in whether an identification can narrow the specimen to a likely species.
Set up the photo
- ◆Place the tick in a clear sealed container or on a light, plain background
- ◆Use bright indirect light and turn off filters
- ◆Rest the phone on a stable object instead of holding it in the air
- ◆Tap the tick on screen to lock focus
Capture the useful views
- ◆Photograph the back from directly above
- ◆Take a second close side or underside view if it can be done safely
- ◆Include a ruler or coin nearby for scale without covering the tick
- ◆Review the image at full size before uploading
